Old Bethpage Village Restoration

This posting started out to be about the World War Two Encampment at Old Bethpage Village but after getting there and seeing what was going on I decided to do an informational posting just on the Old Bethpage Village Restoration project that is there and is the largest activity there.

The following information  I gathered from various materials posted in and around the Old Bethpage Village Restoration site which is abbreviated as OBVR and came into existence in 1963. At that time Nassau County acquired a 165 acre farm located on the Nassau and Suffolk county border. This property was known as the Powell property. Following World War Two this area was undergoing very rapid growth and many of the historical landmarks were being lost. So a plan was put into place to restore and preserve this important part of Long Island history. It is important to note that this restoration is intended to represent a rural village of the mid-19th century.  The colonial settlers many of  whom were Dutch and English founded small areas which served as centers for business and community activities. Normally these area would contain stores, meeting houses and of course taverns. Agricultural activities generally were in outlying areas. This activity was during the 1640s time period but by the 1700s the English had gained control over Long Island, townships were established and any land that was not developed they took control of and the economy  while still agricultural turned to various trades that were dependent on sea and land. The population still enjoyed an unhurried and quiet lifestyle which visitors can get a sense of if they take the time to tour OBVR in an leisurely manner.

Of course elections were a necessary thing in 1848 and here are a couple of posters from that time.
