William Howard Taft was born September 15, 1857 in Cincinnati to Alphonso and Louise Taft. He attended public school in Cincinnati. He attended Yale University and graduated second in his class in 1878. He then attended the University of Cincinnati Law School and graduated in 1880. After graduation from law school he worked for the Cincinnati Commercial as a legal reporter for a year and then 1881 to 1882 he served as Assistant Prosecutor for Hamilton County, Ohio.. Also in 1882 he was the Collector of Internal Revenue for Ohio's first District. From 1885 to 1897 he was Assistant Solicitor, Hamilton County, Ohio. In `1886 he married Helen " Nellie " Herron and they moved to their home on McMillan Street in Cincinnati. He was judge on the Ohio Supreme Court  1887 to 1890 and U. S. Solicitor General from 1890 to 1892.  As a Judge on the Sixth U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals  from 1892 to 1900 he attempted to make reforms to the judicial system. On this court he ruled on patent rights and earned a reputation for strict interpretation of the law. Next he became the Dean of the Cincinnati Law School where he promoted the growth of the school and funded the Circuit Court Library. His career now shifted to work overseas when he became President of the U. S. Philippine Commission 1890 to 1891 and then First Civil  Governor of the Philippines. In this position, 1901 to 1904, he established a modern government and institutions and replaced military rule.He was loved by the Philippine people. Now in 1904 to 1908 he returns to the United States and fills several positions. such as The U. S. Secretary of War and a close advisor to President Roosevelt and heads up the Panama Canal Commission. The canal project was behind schedule and way over budget and his administrative and organizational skills turned the project around. In 1906 he became The Provisional Governor of Cuba. He was President of the United States of America from 1909 to 1913. After leaving the Presidency he moved on to become Professor of Constitutional Law at Yale University in 1913 and served there until 1921. Also, during this period he was President of the League to Enforce Peace which was a forerunner of the League of Nations. For two years during this time he was co-chairman of the National War Labor Board. In 1921 he became Chief Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court where he served until 1930 when he retired. He died in Washington, D.C. on March 6, 1930.

Alphonso and Louise saw to it that their children received good educations and in the family tradition of hard work, fair play and public service. Taft's mother especially took the attitude in raising children that it is what the parents are and not what they do in reference to them which makes the biggest impression on their lives. Evenings were spent most of the time in the large polar reading and playing games. Alphonso was an avid book collector and they often spent time in the evenings discussing books they had read and in particularly what the meaning of the book was.

Pat and I have completed our tour of the boyhood home of William Howard Taft and we now head Lady Blue east for Ulysses Simpson Grant's Birthplace in Point Pleasant, Ohio and his boyhood home and Schoolhouse in Georgetown, Ohio. In route we will have to stop at the " friendly arches " and refuel ourselves because we still have a lot of walking to do today.

As I always say remember that God Loves you and so do I.

You are no shorty and you are looking mighty FIT! Keep up the good work! You have now had all 4 of our daughters with you at least one or more of the Presidential libraries, homes and or museums! How many do you have left to visit?
