Kansas Cosmosphere And Space Center in Hutchinson, Kansas , Sep. 9, 2013

Hello everyone. Tonight I am staying in a Best Western, Red Coach Inn in Newton, Kansas just a few miles north of Hutchinson, Kansas. Today I toured the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, his home, the Chapel where he is buried and the grounds. The overall set up is very attractive.

It has been a scorcher of a day. Very early this morning it was 85 degree and just continued to climb. By the time I got to Abilene, KS where the museum and library are located it was around 101. When I came out to the car which was parked in the sun the car registered 114 degrees. After I started driving to get where I am spending the night it had gone down to a comfortable 105 at 6:00 P. M.
I found an Applebee's Restaurant nearby and had a berry and baby spinach salad which was delicious.Yes, and I lost another hour today as I travel east. I am now on Central Time.

Tomorrow I hope to tour the Cosmosphere and Space Center and the brochure suggest 2 - 4 hours to see it. Also there is an active salt mine that is 650 feet under ground I may tour it but I don't know how long that takes. When I am finished I will head to Jamie's in Tulsa. After posting this I checked the salt mine web site and discovered they are closed on Mondays for visits and tours. OK, so I get to Jamie's earlier. Does places being closed on Mondays have a familiar ring?

On the drive from Newton, Kansas to Hutchinson, Kansas you pass through nothing but beautiful farm land. Occasionally you come across a field of sunflower as shown in the following photograph.

Sun Flowers As Far As You Can See. The Plants Are Thick As Opposed To Being In Wide Rows And Are About 18 to 24 Inch Tall. Yes, This Is Where The Sunflower Seed Come From That We Feed To The Birds.

Hello everyone. Today I toured the Kansas Cosmosphere And Space Center, 1110 North Plum Street, Hutchinson, Kansas and it was terrific. The center starts documenting rocket power back to the period before World War II and the development of rockets that Hitler used against England and proceeds to display the parallel course/competition between the United States and Russia in the development of rocket power and ventures into space. This center is best known for the display and restoration of spaceflight artifacts and educational camps. It is one of only three museums to display flown spacecraft from Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions. The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center grew from a planetarium established on the Kansas State Fairgrounds in 1962. The facility now houses the largest collection of Russian space artifacts outside of Moscow, and the second largest collection of space artifacts in the world, second only to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D. C. The Cosmosphere has four areas to visit: The Hall Of Space Museum, The Justice Planetarium,The Carey Digital Dome Theatre, and Dr. Goddard's Lab. The Cosmosphere has restored flown U. S. spacecraft that are part of the collection of the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum. Two examples on display are the Apollo 13 Command Module Odyssey, and the Liberty Bell 7.  The Liberty Bell 7 Mercury spacecraft was recovered from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and restored and is the only flown spacecraft owned by a museum outside the National Air and Space Museum. The Cosmosphere built much of the replicated hardware seen in the movies Apollo 13 and Magnificent Desolation; Walking on the Moon 3D, and the Mini-series From the Earth to the Moon.

I want to tell you about some of the items that are on display here. There is a U. S. Air Force Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the Liberty Bell spacecraft from Mercury 4 and the Odyssey command module from Apollo 13, as well as a Redstone and Titan II launch vehicles used in the Mercury and Gemini programs. One special item is a moon rock from Apollo 11, the first manned mission to land on the moon.

As I have told people about my touring the Cosmosphere in the state of Kansas the first question I have been asked is how did something like that get placed in Kansas, That was also my first thought and considering it is located in Hutchinson, Kansas with a population of 42,000+ in 2010. Hutchinson is a nice Midwestern town but not the place you would expect to find a display such as this. It is an interesting story. A lady named Patricia Brooks Carey who was a Hutchinson civic leader had a dream and vision to create one of the first public planetarium in the central United States. In 1962 the Hutchinson Planetarium opened inside the Poultry Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds with a used star projector and rented folding chairs. Fours years later, the Hutchinson Planetarium relocated to the campus of the Hutchinson Community College, in what today houses Dr. Goddard's Lab.

In 1976, Carey and the Hutchinson Planetarium Board of directors began planning to significantly expand the facility. They sought the advice of former employee Max Ary, who had worked for the planetarium while going to college. Ary was the director of the Ft. Worth's Noble Planetarium at the time and happened to be serving on a Smithsonian committee that placed tens of thousands of space artifacts in museums after the Apollo program concluded.

The Kansas Cosmosphere and Discover Center was launched in 1980. The facility featured permanent exhibit galleries in the Hall of Space Museum, one of the first OMNIMAX theaters in the world and the Planetarium that started it all. In 1997, the facility was enlarged to its present size, 105,000 square feet nearly tripling the area devoted to the Hall of Space Museum.

When you drive into the parking area the following photograph shows you the first thing you see.

If you would like to learn some more fabulous information about the SR 71 go to Google and check out the material that Wikipedia the free encyclopedia has there it is fascinating . The following are record information about the SR 71 as taken from Wikipedia the free encyclopedia.

" The SR-71 was the world's fastest and highest-flying operational manned aircraft throughout its career. On 28 July 1976, SR-71 serial number 61-7962, broke the world record: an "absolute altitude record" of 85,069 feet (25,929 m).[8][78][79][80] Several aircraft exceeded this altitude in zoom climbs but not in sustained flight.[8] That same day SR-71, serial number 61-7958 set an absolute speed record of 1,905.81 knots (2,193.2 mph; 3,529.6 km/h), approximately mach 3.3.[8][80] "
" The SR-71 also holds the "Speed Over a Recognized Course" record for flying from New York to London—distance 3,508 miles (5,646 km), 1,435.587 miles per hour (2,310.353 km/h), and an elapsed time of 1 hour 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds—set on 1 September 1974 while flown by U.S. Air Force Pilot Maj. James V. Sullivan and Maj. Noel F. Widdifield, reconnaissance systems officer (RSO).[81] This equates to an average velocity of about Mach 2.68, including deceleration for in-flight refueling. Peak speeds during this flight were probably closer to the declassified top speed of Mach 3.2+. For comparison, the best commercial Concorde flight time was 2 hours 52 minutes, and the Boeing 747 averages 6 hours 15 minutes."
" On 26 April 1971, 61-7968 flown by Majors Thomas B. Estes and Dewain C. Vick flew over 15,000 miles (24,000 km) in 10 hrs. 30 min. This flight was awarded the 1971 Mackay Trophy for the "most meritorious flight of the year" and the 1972 Harmon Trophy for "most outstanding international achievement in the art/science of aeronautics".[82] "

Pilot and RSO on 6 March 1990, the last SR-71 Senior Crown flight
" When the SR-71 was retired in 1990, one Blackbird was flown from its birthplace at United States Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, to go on exhibit at what is now the Smithsonian Institution's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.[83] On 6 March 1990, Lt. Col. Raymond E. "Ed" Yielding and Lt. Col. Joseph T. "JT" Vida piloted SR-71 S/N 61-7972 on its final Senior Crown flight and set four new speed records in the process. "
Other Speed Records for the SR 71 according to Wikipedia the free encyclopedia  are as follows:

  1. Los AngelesCA, to Washington, D.C., distance 2,299.7 miles (3,701.0 km), average speed 2,144.8 miles per hour (3,451.7 km/h), and an elapsed time of 64 minutes 20 seconds.[81] "
  2. West Coast to East Coast, distance 2,404 miles (3,869 km), average speed 2,124.5 miles per hour (3,419.1 km/h), and an elapsed time of 67 minutes 54 seconds."
  3. Kansas City, Missouri, to Washington, D.C., distance 942 miles (1,516 km), average speed 2,176 miles per hour (3,502 km/h), and an elapsed time of 25 minutes 59 seconds."
  4. St. Louis, Missouri, to CincinnatiOhio, distance 311.4 miles (501.1 km), average speed 2,189.9 miles per hour (3,524.3 km/h), and an elapsed time of 8 minutes 32 seconds."

Let me tell you folks that is moving it on down the road as they say. I have always loved the Blackbird aircraft and I guess it shows. Well folks this just about concludes my visit to the Kansas Cosmosphere. I truly enjoyed it and I apologize for some of the bad photographs. I have a lot of trouble with reflections when all the displays around me are all enclosed in glass and there is no way to avoid them.  I spent 3 hours at the Cosmosphere and only did the museum and not any of the other exhibits. I recommend this as a top attraction if you are ever in the area.

In reflection on the events of the time period covered by this museum I am struck by the thoughts of how events came about and worked out. For example Hitler was close to developing an atomic bomb and with the German advances in rockets that had considerable range the thought is scary. Further Hitler's work with firing rockets from submarine now that is scary as they could have been right off the coast of the United States and we know how effective the German submarine force was. It appears to me that Hitler was so obsessed with wiping out England that he had not turned his attention to the United States homeland. But I can't get over the fact that our almighty God is in total control of His universe and world history. When you look at it this way as I have for my years on earth I can see how some of the pieces of the puzzle have fit together. Hitler in his wildest imagination could not have realized that much of his advance in technology he meant for destruction of a nation would turn out to result in great advancement for good and yes also harm for mankind worldwide.

Remember that God love you and so do I.

This finishes up my visit to the Kansas Cosmosphere which I said earlier I really enjoyed.
I guess I should explain why these photographs did not make it in the original posting. The
data card in my camera hold some where around 5,000 photographs and as I was going through the Cosmosphere I noticed from the frame count that I was nearing  running out
of space so I put in a new data card and finished the tour. Then as time past and I had a few more trips to post I simply forgot these photographs. So that is the story.

Again permit me to remind you that God Loves you and so do I.
