Thursday, October 11, 2012, East Hartford, CT.

Hello Everyone. Tonight I am staying in a Comfort Inn, 333 Roberts Street, East Hartford, CT. 06108. I ate dinner at a nearby Mexican restaurant. Good and not overly spicy. Let me talk about last night.

Last night I stayed at Provincetown Inn, 1 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA. This is the farest point you can go on Cape Cod. Beautiful location. The Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean join together here and the wind has set up permanent residence here. This inn is a conference center and motel. It has a lot of nice rooms for conferences and meetings but the facility is old. Right now the Inn is beautifully decorated with fall colors. There are many full size wall murals depicting what Provincetown looked like many years ago.

There are about 50 people here at the Inn and some of them who have harbor/ocean view were sitting outside their room in lawn chairs watching the sun rise. I met one lady who was from Bowling Green, KY who was traveling with her aunt and niece and were on their was to Portland and other points to see fall colors. She said she had driven for 2 days in the rain. While watching the sunrise I saw a sea gull who dove down in the water and came up with a small crab and flew over near me where he tore it apart for his breakfast.

Sorry the photo of the gull eating his breakfast will not load. This is pure torture. It is taking 5 attempt to get one picture uploaded. I may just have to wait till I get home to share the photos.

The wind is really strong this morning. I am sitting in the hallway outside the breakfast area in a beautifully decorated sitting area. There is a fireplace with no fire but boy you can really hear the wind howling. Had a really good breakfast in a large room that is set up to 80 to 100 people. It has all windows on two sides which provide a view of Cape Cod Bay and several beautiful bits of scenery. The breakfast room is not very well heated and you can see steam rising from the coffee cups. I enjoyed a bowl of cheerios and mixed fruit, blue berry yogurt, boiled egg, banana, coffee and O.J. YUM. After breakfast and checking out I drove to Herring Cove Beach parking lot and walked up a trail that was to take me to a light house. The sign said 1.5 miles. The only way to reach it is by trail. When my trail intersected with another the sign now says 2.5 miles to the light house. So I did some quick calculations and found that I would have to walk back to the car and that would be a total of 8 miles so I decided to take my 3 mile walk consider it some good exercise. Also I did not trust that at the end of the next 2.5 mile there might be another surprise.

I think I mentioned in another post or it may have been in my notes that trees, grass, flowers all grow in nothing but sand. They can't get enough nutrients to grow tall and big. For example I saw many oak trees that were no more than 8 feet tall that were loaded with acorns. Normally acorns would not be on a tree until it got very tall and big. So it says these oaks are small but several years old. On the way back to the car I walked by some very high sand dunes. By high I mean several hundred feet. I wanted a picture of the Atlantic Ocean from atop these dunes. so up I started. Boy what tough walking. Steep incline. Nothing but loose sand. You take a step forward and slide back a half step. Finally I reached the top of the dune and looked up and there was another one only higher. So onward. Atop of the 2nd dune there was a 3rd staring me in the face. At this point my energy was dropping rapidly so I gave up, went back down and to the car and took pictured of waves breaking on the beach. I was able to get some nice photos of light houses and the area in general. On the way out of the area and heading toward CT. I saw and photographed the light house at Chatham, MA. This light house is the one pictured on the Cape Cod Potato Chip package. Interesting is the fact that the the Mayflower sailed past Chatham Nov.9, 1620 looking for Hudson Bay. Because of dangerous conditions they turned back and sailed past Chatham again in search of a safe harbor. They sailed around the tip of Cape Cod and anchored in the harbor of Proviencetown. They stayed there 5 weeks then sailed across Cape Cod Bay and landed at Plymouth, MA. Dec. 1620. You know Plymouth Rock. Honest, I have a picture of the rock. Someday you will see it.

Tomorrow, the Lord willing I will go to Cheshire, CT. and try to find where we lived while I was in Japanese language school at Yale University. I have the address and GPS says it is still there. The way my GPS has been acting I not sure I can put much reliance in it.

Getting sleepy. So good night and as I used to tell the girls don't let the bed bugs bite. I love you.

  1. Hi Dad it sounds like you had a much more productive day today. I can't believe those dunes. We of course have dunes here at Jones Beach, but have never seen them as high as you describe. Can't wait to see the pictures that won't load. The sunrise photos were just gorgeous. I am afraid I would miss those each morning if I were with you. I am sure I would have the intention the night before and come 5 am I would pull the covers up and just roll over. Ha. I can't imagine what the pilgrims must have gone through. The hardships were nothing like we have ever experienced. Todays average person would surely parish in no time at all. Hope you can find the house in Conn. Remember the "mountain" nearby, I remember it called the Sleeping Giant, wasn't it? Hope you have a blessed day tomorrow. Love you Sweet dreams.
