Durango, CO. Informaton, 8/16/ 2013

I like to share a little information about the places I visit and some interesting facts about the places. At least interesting to me. Durango is located in north western Colorado not far from the four corners area of the country. That is where the four states  ( Arizona, Colorado. Utah and New Mexico ) boundaries form a perfect "+".  Durango began as many town out west did as a booming mining and railroad town with a smelting center. It is now the crossroads for ranching, tourism, commerce and culture. The down town center still has the old flavor of its Victorian past. It is the gateway to the San Juan Mountains which give a much more jagged, precipitous appearance apparently because they are younger than other mountains in the Rockies. There is one highway out here that is called the million dollar highway. It runs from Durango to Silverton and Ouray and has many overlooks and is cut out of nearly vertical cliff sides. This road can be dangerous because of the steep drop offs and the fact that there are no guard rails. Of course this area is a mecca for winter sports as well as hiking, kayaking, rafting, rock climbing and of course golf. One of the main attractions is the Durango/Silverton narrow gage railroad which has been in continuous since 1881. This takes you on a 9 hour round trip through the San Juan National Forest following the Animas River to Silverton. This route takes you through some rugged beautiful country and of course there is a lay over in Silverton for visiting the local attractions.

There are many many things to do and see in the Durango area and it is a wonderful vacation area that gives you a chance to get out and see some of the awesome beauties of God's creation that he created for our use and enjoyment. Yes God does want his people to enjoy life and his creations just as he love us. I love you also.

  1. Durango sounds amazing! If you go to the four corners you can be in four places at once!

  2. I agree with Lisa, can you stand on the spot where all the states meet and say you are in all 4 states at the same time! That would be quite a feat.
